Mexican Food and Type 2 Diabetes

“I have type 2 diabetes and love Mexican food. Could you give me some tips on what to order at my favorite Mexican restaurant?”

The biggest tip for ordering Mexican food would be to try and keep the carbohydrates down. Also having a higher protein and fat amount in the meal this will help to keep the blood glucose level from spiking as high. So instead of a burrito try doing carne asada, also maybe only eat half of the rice and beans that come with dish,or opt for maybe fajita vegetables.
Although you can have a burrito if that is what your truly craving but maybe instead of eating it all ,eat only half. Just try to minimize carbohydrates where you can so if you eat the burrito, maybe do not eat the rice. A general rule of thumb to use is, that if you decide to eat out remeber that you should use it as a treat, and not think you have to deny yourself food, but keep a concious effort not to self endulge. So perhaps eat only half your meal or as stated previously cut the carbohydrates down where you can.

Answer: According to American diabebtes association from 2009 for adults with diabetes is
Before Meals: 70-130 mg/dL
After Meals : <180mg/dL
Each individual person will vary between these ranges but if your blood glucose level is above 180mg/dL when fasting you should definatly let your doctor know. Some helpful tips to help control blood glucose is to consume meals and snacks periodically throughout the day so that you can maintain a constant blood glucose level throughout the day, while minimizing dramatic spikes from low to high. Also exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet with more vegetables and fruits can help too. Although make sure to still count your carbs and keep them withing the recommended range for your meal/snack.
